The Skin Journey: Part 1

You never know how good you have it until things go wrong, especially with your skin. You don’t think about it when you have good skin, but when something happens to it, suddenly you realize that it’s the first thing that people see when they meet you.

In university, I never thought twice about my skin care regime until one day I suddenly broke out with big, red angry acne on my cheeks, chin and jawline. As one pimple went away it would leave big red marks which eventually turned to brown marks and it would take forever to clear up my skin tone. I went from having combination skin to not being able to control oil production. I felt so embarrassed by it that I turned to my doctor for help. I was told it was hormonal acne so I went on birth control in hopes of regulating it. I hated the idea of taking medication for my skin so I eventually stopped. I started being conscious of keeping my skin clean and turned to a bunch of different medical facial treatments like chemical peels, Microdermabrasion and tried as many products as my wallet would allow me.

Over 10 years later, I’ve improved my skin health with treatments and a strict homecare regime and I NEVER slept with make up on. I learned to stop picking at my acne so my breakouts heal faster, and I don’t have as much red and dark brown spots – acne pigmentation. I get the occasional breakout during my period and still have some acne scarring and large pores on my cheeks. My skin tone around my nose, mouth and chin is evening out so I still wear concealer.

What I’m working towards is to control my breakouts and, since it’s hormonal acne, I need to control it from the inside. By regulating hormones, I’ll have less red spots called Post-Inflammatory Pigmentation. I want to keep shrinking my pores and even out my skin tone all over. And now, since I’m in my thirties I want to slow down the aging process!!!!

Every challenge can have a silver lining. My skin problems have led me to study and pursue a career in skin care helping others overcome skin issues and feel beautiful and have confidence. Now I help people understand their skin conditions and lay out realistic plans to achieve skin goals.

My hope is to empower more women to take charge of their skin health and teach you to feel more comfortable in your own skin regardless of what it looks like today. Patience, consistence and lifelong skin care are key.
